چکیده

Recently, there has been a considerable increase in the number of procedures carried out under regional anesthesia. However, percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) procedures are usually performed under general anesthesia. The aim of this study was to assess the safety and efficacy of PCNL under spinal anesthesia in patients with renal calculi. We describe our 9 years experience of performing PCNL under spinal anesthesia for 387 patients with large stones of the upper urinary tract, with regard to the effectiveness and side effects. All patients received spinal anesthetics (Lidocain 5%, or Bupivacaine 0.75%) and underwent PCNL in prone position. The success rate was 94.1%. The incidence of complications was 11.6%. PCNL under spinal anesthesia is feasible, safe, and well-tolerated in management of patients with renal stones. Keywords—percutaneous nephrolithotomy, spinal anesthesia, renal calculi

MATERIALS AND METHODS In a prospective randomized study, 110 patients were randomly assigned into two groups for PCNL; group 1 (n = 52) underwent general anesthesia and group 2 (n = 58) received spinal anesthesia. In group 1, PCNL was performed using standard te...

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy under conscious sedation in morbidly obese patients.

Two morbidly obese males weighing 159 kg and 184 kg underwent percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for large, symptomatic renal stones. To avoid anesthetic complications and cardiorespiratory compromise in the prone position, the procedures were performed under IV sedation with local anesthesia. The risks of PCNL in this patient population are reviewed, and the technique employed to mitigate the...

Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy under Spinal Anesthesia is Safe and Effective

Urinary stone disease is a common health problem and has an incidence of 4-20% worldwide [1]. Percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (PCNL), an efficient and reliable modality in the surgical management of stone disease, has been first described by Fernström and Johansson in 1976 [2]. The popularity of this minimally invasive technique has risen gradually during the last 30 years due to its advantages ...

Comparison Between Spinal and General Anesthesia in Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy

BACKGROUND Hemodynamic stability and blood loss reduction are subjects to further consideration in patients undergoing percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNCL). OBJECTIVES This study compared the preference of spinal anaesthesia (SA) or general anaesthesia (GA) in respect to mentioned concerns. PATIENTS AND METHODS In this randomized clinical trial, 59 patients who underwent PCNL divided into SA...
